- Now hear this: A built-up Michigan Stadium should keep sound from fans and speakers inside — AnnArbor.com — AnnArbor.com continues to top themselves when it comes to long, awkward headlines. According to associate athletic director Michael Stevenson, there will be no “dead zones” in the stadium when the new speaker system is installed for 2010. Hooray for noise.
- Henderson selects his five official visits — ESPN.com — Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida, USC, and Notre Dame, according to Seantrel Henderson’s father, Sean. The article states that he is still considering several other schools, including Michigan and his hometown Minnesota squad, but this still isn’t the best of signs for the Wolverines.
- Clements lays out official visit picture — TheWolverine.com — Four-star tailback Eduardo Clements will make it up to Ann Arbor for the Sept. 12 game against Notre Dame. Michigan is in a group of three with Georgia and Miami at the top of Clements’ list, although Michigan is the only team out of those three to have an official visit set so far (Tennessee is the only other team to get one so far).
- Five-star Floyd changes things — Rivals.com — Michigan is still in the hunt for an official visit from Sharrif Floyd, a five-star DT. He is only sure of two visits, and U-M is among a pack of squads battling it out for the final three.
- Virginia LB pencils Michigan in for a visit — TheWolverine.com — Aramide Olaniyan, a four-star LB, will take a visit to Ann Arbor, although he hasn’t set a date yet. Olaniyan is currently a Duke commit, but will still take all five of his official visits.
- DB Christian has one official set — TheWolverine.com — Cullen Christian has an official set for UCLA, and has stated he wants to take one to Michigan as well. The four-star corner is down to five schools on his list, and Michigan is still in very good standing for a commit.
- AMP: QB Jones talks Michigan — Rivals.com — QB/ATH commit Cornelius Jones is the subject of Rivals.com’s AMP feature, and says he is “100%” committed to Michigan, and that he plans on coming in as a quarterback. However, he is open to playing whatever position helps the team. Gotta like a kid who is willing to put aside his personal interests for a team he isn’t even on yet.
- Michigan expecting good things out of wide receiver Junior Hemingway — AnnArbor.com — Hemingway, coming off a season lost to mono and injuries, has impressed both teammates and coaches in fall camp. Somebody needs to step up and grab a starting spot at outside receiver, and it looks like Hemingway is doing just that, although Rich Rodriguez made it clear that he still has a ways to go to get back into shape.
- Jason Forcier won’t play for Michigan; Tate Forcier, Denard Robinson making strides — AnnArbor.com — It’s getting really hard to write these summaries when AnnArbor.com puts the entire content of the article in the headline. It’s a little disappointing that Jason won’t be on the team this year, but I don’t think anybody really expected him to contribute in any fashion beyond a leadership role.
- Michigan football team deals with minor injuries; Fitzgerald Toussaint has fractured shoulder — AnnArbor.com — Call me crazy, but a fractured shoulder doesn’t sound minor to me. Toussaint may miss the rest of fall camp, and looks headed for a redshirt in a crowded backfield. Donovan Warren is day-to-day with a knee sprain, and several other players are out with minor injuries.
- Defending the Run vs Defending the Pass — Maize n Brew — SCM takes a look at the top defenses against the run and the pass in 2008, and notes that the teams who stopped the run had a markedly better record than teams that stopped the pass. Obviously, you want to stop both, but this could be a very comforting stat to people concerned about the Michigan secondary.
- U-M junior Troy Woolfolk likes his move to safety — Detroit News — It turns out Woolfolk played some safety in high school, and says the position feels “more natural” for him, although he still needs to learn technique. Also, some funny stuff about Denard Robinson’s speed, courtesy of Brandon Graham: “Denard’s pretty fast,” Graham said, giggling, “but he’s got to stay in between the white lines, and I feel like I’m going to go sideline to sideline, so he’s got to outrun me.” Cower in fear, Big Ten QBs, cower in fear.
Basketball:
- The ethical divide: Michigan basketball coach John Beilein is trying to help clean up college basketball — AnnArbor.com — Good luck with that, although if anybody is the man for the job, it’s Beilein, who was named the chair of the new NCAA Ethics Committee. We all know he runs a squeaky-clean program, which cannot be said about many elite teams in the county. Go get ‘em, Coach.
- Michigan guard Laval Lucas-Perry is learning at The Point — AnnArbor.com — “If I’m going to be out there playing significant minutes, I have to be another John Beilein on the floor,” Lucas-Perry said. “I have to help my players and have to know what coach Beilein is thinking and letting everyone know the defense we’re in and tell them reminders of what the offense is playing or if they don’t know the time or something.”
- Tim Hardaway bonds with son on, off the court — Miami Herald — Class of 2010 commit Tim Hardaway, Jr., has had a rocky relationship with his father, Tim Hardaway (of NBA fame), but they have grown closer in recent months. Definitely worth a read.

The new Scout 300 was released today, with several Michigan commitments and targets included. Here’s who made the list (Note: Top 50 are all five-stars, the rest four-stars):
- Cretin Durham (MN) OT Seantrel Henderson maintained his spot atop the list, to the surprise of no one.
- Priviso West (IL) WR Kyle Prater comes in at No. 13. Prater is considered a long-shot at best for Michigan.
- Philadelphia DT Sharrif Floyd earns a fifth star and is ranked No. 38. Michigan is still very much in the mix for Floyd, and has a shot at receiving one of his official visits in the fall.
- Inkster (MI) QB Devin Gardner is the first Michigan commit on the list, just one spot behind Floyd at No. 39. Gardner’s performance at the Elite11 camp vaulted him up the list and earned him a fifth star. Hopefully Rivals will follow suit when they revise their rankings.
- Coming in at No. 61, just one spot below his Rivals100 ranking, is Pittsburgh CB Cullen Christian, long considered a near-lock for Michigan.
- Nathaniel Narbonne (CA) S Sean Parker makes the list at No. 65.
- Booker T. Washington (FL) RB Eduardo Clements comes in at No. 85, two spots above former Michigan RB target (and current Oklahoma commit) Brennan Clay.
- St. Francis (CA) S Dietrich Riley checks in at No. 98, rounding out the Michigan targets in the top 100.
- Lake Region (FL) S Marvin Robinson is the second U-M commit on the list, slotting in at No. 107.
- Glenville (OH) S Latwan Anderson is ranked No. 117, far off his No. 35 ranking in the Rivals100.
- Livonia (MI) Stevenson RB Austin White is a solid four-star to Scout, coming in at No. 124. White is currently a mid-three star to Rivals, but hopefully will make a leap up when the new rankings are released.
- Hollywood Hills (FL) CB Tony Grimes jumps in three spots later, at No. 127. Grimes is another corner who seems likely to drop for Michigan. At this point, we’ll take all the DBs we can.
- Hey, another corner! Palmdale (CA) CB Josh Shaw is No. 136, although Michigan hasn’t expressed as much interest in Shaw as they have in Christian or Grimes.
- Warren Mott (MI) DE C.J. Olaniyan comes in two spots later, at No. 138. Michigan is still in the running for the in-state DE, who still seems relatively open in his recruitment.
- Ann Arbor Pioneer WR Ricardo Miller (as a PiHi alum, I love typing that, even if the recruiting services still list him at his old HS) is the third Wolverine commit on the list, checking in at No. 155.
- Cass Tech CB Dior Mathis is the No. 166 prospect. Mathis has changed up his list quite often in recent weeks, with Oregon and MSU the latest to jump to the top of his list, although Michigan and Miami are still in the running.
- Millersville (MD) S Josh Furman check in at No. 183. Although listed by Scout as a safety, Michigan is recruiting Furman as a LB. He is taking an official visit for the Notre Dame game, and the Wolverines have a good shot at a commitment.
- Canton (OH) South WR Jerald Robinson is the fourth U-M commit on the list, coming in at No. 251.
- Sunbury (OH) OT Skyler Schofner is the final Wolverine target on the list, slipping into the Scout 300 at No. 297.
For those who care to compare this list to the list of targets from last month’s Rivals250 update, head over here.

They play for championships and they put a lot of people in the NFL.”

Rivals.com came out today with the new Rivals250 for the Class of 2010, and several Michigan targets are listed among the top 250 prospects in the country. Here’s an update on the current Wolverine commits and targets that made the list:
- Tackle Seantrel Henderson still holds the top overall spot. Henderson recently announced his intended destinations for official visits, and Michigan did not make the cut, so it’s tough to feel optimistic about the Wolverines’ chances right now.
- Receiver Kyle Prater comes in at No. 4 in the Rivals100. The 6-5, 205 pound prospect from Hillside, Illinois is taking his recruitment slow, with Michigan listed among a large group of schools he is interested in. Don’t expect a whole lot of news on Prater until we get closer to signing day.
- Philadelphia DT Sharrif Floyd checks in at No. 9. Floyd’s leaders keep changing over his recruitment, so keep an eye out for news on the 6-3, 310 pound tackle. Pulling Floyd would be a huge get for Michigan, with the glaring lack of depth at DT on the current roster.
- Cleveland DB Latwan Anderson jumped from No. 74 to No. 35 in the latest rankings. Anderson had named Michigan among his top two with West Virginia, but recently named a list of six schools (WVU, Michigan State, Georgia, Cincinnati, Miami (FL) & UNC) in the running for official visits that did not include the Wolverines. Still, nothing is set in stone yet.
- Very surprising news today regarding OLB Tony Jefferson, who was named the No. 50 overall prospect today. Jefferson announced a commitment to UCLA less than a week after dropping USC as a contender and setting his official visits, which included a trip to Michigan on October 24th. He cited the overwhelming recruiting process as a reason for his early decision, and sounds very set with his decision.
- Pittsburgh CB Cullen Christian, long thought to be a Michigan lock, is the No. 60 recruit on the list after not being named in the previous Rivals250. The big (6-0, 180) corner has impressed on the camp circuit, winning defensive back MVP honors at the State College NIKE Camp.
- Safety Sean Parker gets the No. 85 spot on the list. Parker has expressed a strong interested in leaving the state of California, and is working on setting up an official visit to Michigan. He has stated that he will take a visit to Ann Arbor and to Notre Dame on Sept. 4, but has not named the other three schools that will receive visits, although he does maintain he will take all five officials.
- The first Michigan commit on the list checks in at No. 123. S/LB Marvin Robinson holds the top spot among Wolverine commits, although he may not hold that distinction for long if Christian drop for the Maize and Blue soon.
- Miami (FL) Booker T. Washington running back Eduardo Clements is listed at No. 127. Michigan is among a leading group of three for Clements, along with Georgia and Florida State, and he says none of the three schools holds an outright lead. He is expected to name a school before the end of the calender year, as he intends to enroll early at whatever school he chooses.
- Stone Mountain (GA) DT Mike Thornton earned his fourth star and moved into the No. 152 spot. Michigan only recently came forward with an offer for Thornton, which moved them into the top 10 in his recruitment along with a host of southern schools. He plans on cutting his list down to five soon.
- WR commit Ricardo Miller comes in at No. 158, a slight drop from being listed at No. 139 in the previous Rivals250. This may be a result of the early commitment, coupled with the fact that Miller has not been hitting the summer camp circuit.
- La Canada (CA) St. Francis DB Dietrich Riley is listed at No. 166. Riley, who would most likely come in as a safety, is still wide open in his recruitment, and Michigan is in the mix.
- Miami (FL) Northwestern OL Torrian Wilson checks in at No. 169. Wilson, who at one point named Michigan as his leader before backing off of that statement, mentions Michigan will be one of three teams he is sure will receive an official visit, along with Stanford and Louisville. He has stated repeatedly throughout his recruitment that academics is a large factor, which bodes well for the Wolverines.
- No. 171 on the list is Inkster (MI) quarterback commit Devin Gardner, placing him below Michigan State commit Joe Boisture (No. 104) but above Penn State commit Robert Bolden (unlisted) among in-state quarterback prospects.
- Two spots after Gardner is Detroit Cass Tech CB Dior Mathis. Mathis recently named Oregon and Michigan State as his top two, followed by Michigan and Miami, although he has yet to visit Oregon and has changed his top teams several times over the course of his recruitment. Michigan is not out of the running by any means, with Mathis noting that the Wolverines having three former Technicians in the last recruiting class (Will Campbell, Teric Jones & Thomas Gordon) is a definite positive.
- Miami (FL) Miami Central RB Brandon Gainer comes in at No. 184. Gainer has named Michigan and Florida State as his top two, and says he is “real close” to making a commitment. Unfortunately, that statement came after a visit to Tallahassee, so hopefully Gainer makes the trip up to Ann Arbor before making his final call.
That rounds out the list of targets in the current Rivals250. Head over to TheWolverine.com for more on football recruiting, and make sure to keep checking in to The Wolverine Blog for updates on Michigan commits and recruits.

- There, I Said It: Deconstructing the Blankie — We Will Always Have Tempe — Sam at WWAHT pens a great piece on just how much people should weigh Ohio State’s 53-game win streak over non-BCS-bound teams (holy @#$%!) versus their five-game losing streak against top-ten teams. Conclusion: stop using somewhat misleading records such as the ones previously stated and just enjoy the fact that your team is 83-19 under Sweatervest. Tremendous, well-thought out post that is worth a read.
- Trouble Up North? — Eleven Warriors — Ah, the flip side. 11W links to that idiotic News & Sentinel post that suggested Rich Rodriguez would be Marshall’s head coach next season as if it was a real news article, then goes on a rant about how RichRod’s job could be in jeopardy, then says he’ll probably be back for year three, and somewhere in the middle says the key to his continued employment is the success this season of a bunch of freshman who haven’t seen the field yet. Um, what?
- The Seantrel Henderson Sweepstakes — The Daily Gopher — I might have put this at the top again, but I’m running out of good Seantrel pictures. The Daily Gopher is doing a great (albeit slightly creepy, in the sense that all recruiting is slightly creepy) job of aggregating news on the No. 1 prospect in the country. This edition has a lot of interesting tidbits, including Henderson’s father saying he has a hard time saying no, Henderson himself claiming several schools (including Michigan) offering him the chance to play both football and basketball, and the possibility of school prestige playing a large part in his recruitment. From the Michigan side of things, I think we’re a pretty big longshot right now, but this could be one of those recruitments that comes down to the wire. RichRod, prepare the snake oil!
- The Big East: 25 Years Too Late — Black Shoe Diaries — BSD scoffs at the notion of Penn State leaving the Big Ten for the Big East (something the Big East has recently expressed interest in), noting the irony that Joe Paterno and the school petitioned the conference in the early ’80s hoping to become a member, but were denied because it was thought they would be too dominant in football and not competitive in basketball. Which, by and large, is exactly how they stack up in the Big Ten, if you maintain a loose definition of “dominance”. After 15 years of establishing themselves in the Big Ten, it makes no sense for Penn State to leave for the sad-sack Big East.

- Idiocy, Now in Print — Maize n Brew — Beauford over at MnB absolutely dismantles this idiotic article by Dave Poe of the Parkersburg News & Sentinel, which suggests that this will be Rich Rodriguez’s last season as Michigan’s coach, and Marshall would be a sensible next destination for RichRod. Please excuse me while I collect pieces of my brain from the corners of my room.
- WMU lands heralded lineman Dann O’Neill, who transfers from Michigan — Kalamazoo Gazette — So yeah, it’s official. O’Neill is off to K-Zoo. Best of luck to him at Western. I have nothing else to add, as he is no longer a Wolverine, and like RichRod, I try to save my breath for guys who are actually on the team.
- Five nonconference games to fear in the Big Ten — ESPN.com — Adam Rittenberg says the Western Michigan game, U-M’s opener, could potentially be very dangerous for the Wolverines, and I can’t disagree. WMU has a proven quarterback in Tim Hiller, and Tate Forcier will likely be making his first career collegiate start. However, I still think Michigan will pull this one out, though it may be uncomfortably close.
- OT Henderson names four of five official visits — ESPN.com — Seantrel Henderson will “definitely” be visiting Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Florida, according to his father, Sean. Florida State is also mentioned as a strong possibility for the fifth visit. Henderson still lists Michigan as a school he is considering, but without an official visit, I think we can pretty much write off any hope of landing the No. 1 recruit in the country.
- Putting Prater at QB — Chicago Sun-Times — Hillside (IL) Proviso West’s Kyle Prater, Rivals.com’s No. 3 wide receiver in the Class of 2010, is looking to play a little quarterback in his senior season. I doubt this affects his collegiate position at all, but it adds an interesting wrinkle to his skill set if he’s able to be a dynamite wideout with a passable arm. Video of Prater playing both quarterback and wide receiver in practice is at the end of the article. Michigan remains in Prater’s top 10.
- All-Time Rivals100: Nos. 91-100 — Rivals.com — Rivals is picking their all-time Top 100 based on the actual collegiate careers of the players at each spot in the Rivals100 since 2002 (when their recruiting rankings started). Michigan figures heavily into the first segment, with Terrence Taylor (Class of 2005) taking the No. 96 spot. QB Matt Gutierrez (2002), S Ryan Mundy (2003), and OL Brett Gallimore (2004) all landed at Michigan from the same ranking as Taylor, and DT Adam Patterson (2006) and WR Toney Clemons (2007) both were the No. 91 overall player in their class. So yes, recruiting can be a bit of a crapshoot.

- In Defense of the Manzi — Black Heart Gold Pants — BHGP comes to the defense of quarterback Ricky Stanzi, comparing his numbers favorably to several, more higly-regarded, Big Ten quarterbacks, including the Heisman candidate listed above. Yes, Stanzi did produce more offensive yards than Pryor last year, but (1) he was a year older, and (2) he threw five more picks and only two more touchdowns. Wait, why am I defending Terrelle Pryor?
- Playoffs, Realignment, and Relegation: A Revamp of the BCS System — The Only Colors — Despite an entirely unnecessary Appy State reference, this MSU blog puts together an incredibly interesting playoff system that, unfortunately, will never happen.
